Don has been a member of the International Birdwatching Fellowship from its beginning in 1991. He plays a big part in identifying and tagging native birds as well as migratory birds and has established international connections in pursuit of this activity. For over forty years Don has had a key role in the operation of the Rotamah Island Bird Observatory and is also knowledgeable about the bird life in the Sale Common and areas further afield. Don is a Life Fellow of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
In Rotary, Don is currently President of the Rotary e-Club of Melbourne District 9800 which he joined at the beginning of 2024. He is a past member for 37 years of the Rotary Club of Sale District 9820, having been inducted on 22 August 1988 with the classification of Lay Administration – Uniting Church. He’s had several changes of classification since then and at the time of his resignation in 2024 it was Senior Active – Adult Community Education.
Don was Club Secretary the year after his induction and was Club President twice as well as being Foundation Chair also holding other Directorships for several years. He is also a Past Governor of District 9820.
Don was on the HOC Board of RICON23 Melbourne, where he has the role of publicity and PR director.
Don is a keen bird observer has been a bird researcher and bander for thirty years as well as chair of the Rotamah Island Bird Observatory in the Gippsland Lakes Victotia Australia for the same period.
Don established and has managed the Fellowship’s Website since 1994 and continues in the webmaster role with the upgrade of our website currently being conducted.
